There was no sewage or waste disposal being offered, leading to a very large amount of garbage and filth". There is no "food, water, healthcare, law enforcement available here" and the single communal shower serves all residents, up to 4, in winter.

The so-called Salvation Mountain was a series of painted rocks, stacked three stories high, with bible verses and art work.

Located just east of California State Route , the entrance to Slab City is easily recognized by the colorful Salvation Mountain, which is a small hill approximately three stories tall and entirely covered in latex paint, concrete and adobe , and festooned with Bible verses.

It was a project built over two decades by Leonard Knight. In , Salvation Mountain was named a National Treasure. The current Salvation Mountain is actually the second construction to occupy the site; [17] Knight began the first Salvation Mountain in , using highly unstable construction methods that allowed the mountain to collapse in East Jesus is an experimental, sustainable and habitable art installation located in the Slab City area.

There is no religious connotation in the name East Jesus — it is a colloquialism for a place in the middle of nowhere beyond the edge of service availability; the off-grid facility operates with no municipal utilities.

The Chasterus Foundation, a c 3 non-profit formed after his death in , has since guided the curation and expansion of East Jesus.

He died in May Information published in said that there was a solar power system with a battery bank made up of expired batteries disposed by telecom companies.

East Jesus artwork is living, growing and ever-changing, and embraces the thousands of varied voices from contributing artists who have added to the installation.

Each day, residential staff was giving dozens of free tours, and hosted visiting artists and overnight guests. A article described East Jesus as an "art museum" with "eccentric art installations made of repurposed garbage A January report stated that the residents' camp a "maze of trailers" had a caretaker by that time, Pyro Iskaki, and that the commune was equipped with a "battery bank, a backup diesel generator, composting toilets, a water heater, a hand-washing station, a library, a pantry, and a recycling area".

The Range is an open-air nightclub complete with stage, lights, amplifiers, and speakers, with tattered couches and old chairs for seating.

Every Saturday night at around dusk, locals and visitors meet for a talent show that features permanent resident musicians and anyone else who wants to get up on stage and perform.

The venue is run by old-time resident William Ammon, known as Builder Bill. Ammon's wife, Robin Ammon, collected old prom dresses for people to wear.

These prom dresses are used when they put on a prom because many people who live there have not been able to actually go to a prom.

Thousands of campers and RV owners, most retired, use the site during the winter months. The " snowbirds " stay only for the winter before migrating north in spring to cooler climates.

Some of these "Slabbers" derive their living from government programs and have been driven to "The Slabs" by poverty. Others have moved to "The Slabs" to learn how to live off the grid and be left alone.

Still others have moved there to stretch their retirement income. A January report stated that Slab City was started by "transient, freedom-seeking people" who are now "all living off the grid in trailers, tents, lean-tos, and broken-down school buses in a remote patch of the Sonoran Desert".

The report added that the community "has more than a dozen individual neighborhoods In an interview, well-known resident "Spyder" summarized the appeal of Slab City.

This type of living isn't for everyone, and you'll need to rely on survival instincts to make it each day. Prepare for a primitive lifestyle. Since you simply cannot run to a shower house, flip on ESPN or hit the gym, you must mentally prepare yourself for life away from civilization.

This means you'll need to learn food growing, basic survivalist skills and mentally training yourself to live with literally nothing more than what you choose to bring.

Plan ahead. The new paradigm in primitive living is to plan ahead, unlike the days when you had a Swiss Army knife and some clothes.

Several items would come in handy should you wish to remain technologically engaged with society: a small or medium solar panel charger, small rainwater collection kit water stowage , a tent large enough to stand and not feel cramped up in, a means to cook food, at least two weeks worth of easy-to-carry rations and either a consistent financial source, or the skills to barter.

Remember——you'll be living outside of a city that is relatively small and without much work. Part 2 of Find your way there.

Niland sits on California Highway , which runs near Interstate Part 3 of Once you arrive, find space.

The area is considered 'deserted territory' by the United States government; [ citation needed ] however, those living there have set up their own camps, so find space that is a comfortable distance from your nearby neighbor.

Many 'courtesy' rules exist at The Slabs, such as allowing perennial RVers the courtesy to have the same spot, although these rules are not enforced since they, essentially, cannot be enforced because nobody owns the land.

Get situated. If driving, you'll probably want to set up camp near your vehicle to allow others the opportunity to have space; if walking, perhaps 'mark' your territory with a flag, stick sign or something similar.

Set up your tent, prepare your bedding, then start mingling with the locals, in order to learn more about The Slabs and their 'community courtesy rules'.

Learn about surviving. Many kind folks may have rations to give or loan from time to time, yet it's ultimately your responsibility to feed, water and bathe yourself.

Ask if different outposts have been created to help people learn about survival. He explained to us how the community works, where to get food and water and who you should know if you lived there.

We spoke to some long-term Slabbers, learned about all the pros and cons to living in a place like this. One of the most fascinating individuals to me was Jack, head of West Satan.

Jack has been living in the Slabs for years, he built himself a nice, creative little home next to lots of art.

He has solar, a massive fridge, sells merchandise, lets people stay at his place and does tours of Slab City. He is an interesting individual with great stories and we learned a lot about life in the Slabs from him.

One of the downsides of Slab City is definitely the drugs. There are a lot of addicts and the addicts are the ones that are most likely committing crimes.

They might break into your house and steal your possessions. You can really only protect yourself by not leaving the house or always having somebody look out for it.

Slab City also has more infrastructure than you might think at first glance: there is a river shower where you can bath yourself, there is a library, a hostel with internet, there are tours, they have their own Facebook community page and Amazon actually delivers to the Slabs!

Solar was definitely a game changer in the Slabs. A few years ago, electricity was a rare thing around there and solely run off of generators, but now a lot of people have really nice and big solar setups which makes off the grid living so much easier.

To find out about all of this, you have to talk to the community, and for me, that was really the intriguing part of the night we spent there.

To be honest, when I was there, I was captivated by it all. I loved the idea of being able to just build a house there.

Although I am not an artist, I was always drawn to the creative side, and seeing what some of the people have built really inspired me.

But on the other hand, do I really want to live in the middle of the desert? Could I even do that being from a different country?

But it inspired an idea in me to one day live in a community with likeminded people, where you grow together, share and build a life far away from big cities and social rules.

So after spending 24 hours in Slab City, I felt inspired, educated and happy to have finally seen this place. And although I will probably never live there, one day I will be back in winter and who knows, maybe at least I will stay a little longer next time.

This is not a full report on Slab City and I have absolutely no clue if everything I was told is true. This article was written by rideonthewildside.

Hearing that made me laugh, but thinking about it, it probably has some truth to it. Slab City is a lawless place in terms of government laws.

You can live freely here and you can be whoever you want, but you also have to follow the rules. There is a leader and a core community of long term Slabbers that call the shots.

Up until recently that apparently meant you were taken out of your house, which was then burnt down and you were chased out of town.

We were told, that they have changed the rules and house burning is not allowed anymore because some people took advantage of it. But still, if you are not wanted you will have to go.

To live a good life in Slab City, people join communities. There are lots of them, and depending on who you are, what your believes are, there is probably one where you fit right in.

Or if not, you just found your own community. If there is a free piece of land, you can just take some rocks and glass bottles or whatever else you might find and you mark your land.

They have food vouchers and they rely on sharing and swapping within the community. We were told about a European vet that has been living there for years.

Everybody goes to her to treat their animals and there are loads. There are doctors, lawyers and all sorts of people that used to live standard lives and decided to break with it all and go and live in the Slabs.

We met a lot of very kind and interesting people in this place. But yes, a lot of them were on drugs, a lot of them were drunk.

But they are exactly the free spirits that you usually find at alternative festivals, just that this is not a weekend celebration but their lives.

Some might kill me for saying that, but to me it sounds a little bit like a permanent Burning Man, although I have to admit that I have never been there.

The next day, one of the people in the Library offered to show us around. We went to see some art at East Jesus, the animal graveyard, the hostel, bar and a lot of other places.

He explained to us how the community works, where to get food and water and who you should know if you lived there. We spoke to some long-term Slabbers, learned about all the pros and cons to living in a place like this.

Plan trips to Niland sparingly. If you can hitch a ride with someone to town every couple of weeks to gather rations or water, take the opportunity to do so.

If hitchhiking back and forth, you should only carry what you can, and maybe make several trips each week.

Keep a level head and kind demeanor while living at The Slabs. Although most individuals are down to earth, rude and disruptive individuals are dealt with, most of the time not very kindly.
